Snowy Extended Family Session at Highlands Ranch Mansion

In an unusual turn of weather events, we have had 3 days of almost non-stop snow here in Colorado, which is extremely unusual for early November. Apparently, the last time we had this much snow was in the 1990s (ages ago, if you ask my kids, lol). It made commute times awful, led to tons of cancellations, and finally on the 3rd day, my kid’s schools called a snow day - yay!!! The beauty outside got me thinking about my last snow session (these are hard ya’ll, especially if its still snowing outside), and reminded me that I never blogged that snow session at Highlands Ranch Mansion.

Snow sessions in the Metro area are hard to plan because the snow tends to melt off pretty quickly. And if it doesn’t melt off quickly, then that means it’s pretty cold outside, which makes shooting difficult. This was true of my snowy extended family session last year. We pre-set the date for right after Thanksgiving due to extended family being in town, and wouldn’t you know it, snow dumped on us in the previous days and then we had unseasonably cold temps that held the snow. Brr…That did not stop us. With some good planning —-warm clothes, heated socks and gloves, the H family made this session look effortless. Here are some of my favorites.

There were a couple of other things that made this session go “swimmingly”. We had all of Highlands Ranch Mansion grounds to ourselves because who wants to do a photo session in 20 degree temps; and, this lovely family also had a dinner reservation at a nice restaurant planned for after the session. We all like something to look forward to after a family session and a nice dinner fits the bill.
